Re-elected: Richard Kirk remains UIA Region IV Councillor

“Sustainable Futures — Leave No One Behind”

The theme of the International Union of Architects (UIA) triennial meeting is more fitting than ever. With lofty sustainability targets, world leaders are looking to integrated social, economic and environmental solutions to the challenges we face with climate change. The World Congress of Architects is a space for the type of innovation we need: a cultural and intellectual exchange among some of the most influential thought-leaders in architecture.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN highlight the multitude of intersecting issues that need solving - in relation to each other, rather than separate. Architecture and design are fields to flesh out how enduring infrastructure can meet the needs of inhabitants, while remaining responsible to the environment. A design can't be environmentally responsible without also being socially sustainable.

Thousands of experts, colleagues, students and friends of architecture traveled to witness the XXIXth UIA General Assembly in Copenhagen this 6th to 9th of July.

The UIA Council Election for the 2023-26 term

Since its foundation in 1948, the UIA has worked to unify architects around the globe. They aspire to serve society in two ways: by influencing public policies and making innovative advances in architecture.

The UIA organizes its congresses in collaboration with a host UIA Member Section. The process begins with interested Member Sections submitting bids to host the congress. These bids are presented to the UIA General Assembly, where UIA Member Sections vote to select the host for the congress - six years before the actual event.

Richard Kirk advocates for participation in the UIA

Richard Kirk has been re-elected as one of UIA's Region IV Councillors for 2023-26. He has long been an advocate for the Australian Institute of Architects to remain active in the UIA. As one of KIRK's core values, the importance of sustainability and responsible architecture can't be overlooked in modern design solutions. Cross-national networking is essential for the world's architects to continue to serve society.

KIRK has been designing enduring and responsible buildings since 1995 under the leadership of Richard Kirk. After graduating from University of Queensland in 1991 with Honours, Richard started a firm staying true to culturally significant and authentic design. KIRK now has studios located in Brisbane, Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur.
