The Timber Tower

KIRK's Timber Tower design for NIOA is an experimental project featuring Australia's first multi-storey commercial building utilising CLT and GLT wholly sourced from Australia.

The 5-level structure was erected within 28 days, with the entire project including fitout for 90 staff completed within 7 months.

The narrow building site eventually led the architects to an unconventional solution: both longitudinal walls consist of load-bearing panels of cross-laminated timber. Joists of glulam timber have been set atop these, to be topped in turn with ceiling slabs of CLT. Striking K-shaped diagonal struts behind the glazed building front reinforce the building.
