South Brisbane, Queensland In 2006, KIRK undertook the renovation of a two-storey building in Manning Street, originally constructed as a boot factory in 1973. The building accommodated our growing practice along with two office tenancies and car parking.

Concept
To provide natural light to the thin interior footprint, both the front and rear of the building are fully glazed, with skylights allowing natural light to flood the central stairwell. Communal and meeting spaces are located at the ends of the building with an open plan work area between. The rear wall of the office can be fully retracted to open the office to a timber-lined deck.
The plan maintains transparency between these lit facades so all staff are afforded a view to outside.
This outdoor space provides respite from the intensive activity of the office.
Materials
The alterations use a limited palette of materials; primarily plasterboard walls, Marmoleum floors and timber-framed full height glazing. The general office is served by indirect ceiling lighting while LED screens and local task lighting serve individual work areas.
